I did it! I swam… In the lap-pool. Granted, it was with a kickboard, but I managed to splash around in a (somewhat) orderly fashion for 20 minutes this morning, while my son was in swimming lessons.

By now it must be clear to you that I am NOT a swimmer. Despite taking lessons when I was a kid, I was the only sixth grader who did not pass the swimming test that determined whether or not we could handle the big pool — the one with the diving board and the “deep end.” I remember trying so hard to pass that test. I remember the embarrassment of failing, and the loneliness of paddling around the kiddie pool during our end-of-the-year pool party while my classmates dove and swam like fish. (Scarred for life, I tell you!)
Determined to raise a son who can swim, our son has taken swimming classes since he was a baby. Like his mama, he doesn’t naturally “take” to the water. However, I think he’s finally starting to get the hang of it… He’s more comfortable now, and his teacher even “passed” him to the next level of swimming lessons!
Parents are allowed to swim while their little ones take lessons. I’ve had a nagging feeling that I should take advantage of this opportunity… Maybe even learn how to swim once and for all. Heck, other aspects of my coordination and athleticism have improved over the years… Maybe I can swim now, too! I also thought it would be motivating for my boy to see me exercising in the pool. He is still at the age where he worships and emulates mom and dad… I love that.
So I got in the pool today. It’s intimidating to do a new sporty activity when you don’t know the protocol. The lanes were full, and a lifeguard told me to share a lane with someone by “circle swimming.” Of course, I was swimming with a kickboard and flippers. I felt a little (okay… a lot) foolish, to be honest with you. But that feeling passed as soon as I got over myself and realized that no one cared what I was doing or how I looked! Even with the kickboard and fins, I got a great workout, and best of all — I was proud of myself.
Sometimes it’s good to jump in and try something new, even if you’re not comfortable with it. Even if you never do it again. It can 1) get you out of a workout “rut” — preventing boredom and stagnation with your routine, and 2) set a good example for your kids. Courage, bravery, willingness to try new things, perseverance… All important qualities! They’re watching everything we do. Let’s set a good example when it comes to sports and fitness.
What will you try this week?
