Can you tell that I’ve been “feeling it” for yoga lately? Yoga is not new to me; I’ve been practicing yoga since I was in my teens, although not as consistently as I do today. In my last post, I discussed the importance of maintaining proper alignment during yoga (and how practicing in your undies can help). Today, I want to share a couple of tricks that keep me present and IN THE MOMENT when I’m on my mat.
Yoga Mat Affirmations
I love positive affirmations. They’re a form of “positive brainwashing,” and although I used to see them as silly and even somewhat delusional, I now swear by them. They keep things positive and loving, and they remind you that you’re doing just fine. In fact, you ROCK… And it’s okay to admit it!
How lovely, when for most of our lives we’re told not to be vain, or selfish, or self-serving. What a RELIEF to be able to tell yourself something positive and kind (for once)!
Yoga mat affirmations can be created using sticky notes or stick-on mailing labels or name tags. Choose something that will stick, but won’t adhere long-term. You don’t want super-strong adhesive to ruin your — sometimes expensive — yoga mat!
I like sticking yoga mat affirmations in areas of my mat that aren’t used much, but that are places I’ll see regularly throughout my session; for example, in the top corner(s).
Some affirmations to consider:
- All is well in my world; life is simple and easy.
- I am safe.
- Every day I’m getting healthier and stronger.
You can choose to state your affirmations in first person (i.e. “I am beautiful”), or second person if that feels more comfortable to you (i.e. “You are beautiful”). You can also keep things really neutral if that’s an easier starting point (i.e. “Life is beautiful”).
The photo below shows a typical image of my yoga area. I have my yoga mat affirmations on my mat, my meditation timer on my iPad, and a diffuser (for essential oils) going. Aromatherapy is another great way to stay grounded, connected, and present during your yoga (or other exercise) session. Read on for one of my favorite grounding diffuser blends.
Women’s Grounding Diffuser Blend:
- 2 drops cedarwood for grounding
- 2 drops lavender for calming
- 1 drop clary sage to support female hormone balance
- 1 drop ylang ylang for playfulness, and to lighten it up
Add to your diffuser per manufacturer’s instructions.
And last but not least, since we’re on the subject of yoga mat affirmations (and thus, YOGA MATS in general), try my homemade yoga mat cleaning spray!
DIY Yoga Mat Cleaner with Essential Oils:
In a spray or spritz bottle, combine:
- 3/4 cup water
- 1/4 cup white vinegar OR witch hazel (or half ‘n half… in other words, 2 Tbsp of each)
- 5 drops melaleuca or eucalyptus essential oil
- 5 drops lavender essential oil
To clean your mat, lightly scrub it with a soft brush, cloth, or sponge to remove any surface “junk.” Next, shake your spray bottle, and spray your mat generously, covering the surface that you use for yoga/exercise. Wipe down your mat with a damp cloth, and then hang it to dry. It should take no more than 15 minutes for it to dry completely, and you’re ready to go!
